how To Choose The Right Doll House For You

****

Jayne Cremasco

A doll house, if created and finished with care can very well become a family heirloom. With this in mind, you should not rush into the purchase, but should take your time and look at different available models carefully before deciding on the right house for you.

I think the first decision should be whether you want to purchase a house that has already been built, or if you want to purchase a doll house kit and build it yourself. Personally I think the fun and satisfaction realized when building a kit is the only way to go! You may however not feel comfortable in taking on this task, and if this is the case by all means look for a house already assembled.

Once this decision has been made, you should decide what style of house you want to own. There are many styles available, from cottages to grand Victorian style homes, to modern houses. Accessories and doll house furniture for every style of home is available for purchase. Some people choose the style based on their childhood house, or on a full size house that they wish they could own!

Each style of doll house will also be available in a few different sizes. I don’t mean the scale of the doll house, but the actual physical size. If you have limited space available for display, you will want to look at the smaller models.

If you plan to have children handle or play with the doll house, you should also take that into consideration when choosing the type and style of doll house you purchase. Some styles are sturdier, and the rooms are more easily accessible than others. Avoid houses with intricate gingerbread trims as these are easily damaged by children.

If you may consider adding to your doll house in the future, look for a model that has additions available. You may decide you are happy with the house as it is, but it is nice to have the option of adding another couple of rooms onto it in the future. There are a number of doll house kits available that allow for this option.

Doll house building, decorating and furnishing is a wonderful hobby, that should be enjoyed for years to come. Take your time each step of the way, beginning with your choice of doll houses and have fun!

Tips and Tricks for Dollmakers

  • Hanging in there

In more ways than one! Had a fun day today - my friend Karen has an art play day every month and I was able to make it today. We played with fabric paint and Shiva paint sticks. Fun. I don't own any rubbing plates (amazing, eh?) - and she didn't have the paint sticks - so it worked out great, lol. While I was there I colored my severed hands with Dye-na-flow - and when I got home I strung them up in the garage to dry. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. They do look kind of creepy hanging there!

  • Plush, plush

I have nearly sold out of the plush down at The Stash so I bought a bunch more fleece and I'm making more. I'm SO glad they are being loved! These are the latest two .. this is LizzieBeth - Lizzie wants to be a stripper but Beth wants to be an electrical engineer - they aren't really happy with each other right now.

Then we have EllieMae - she told me her story but the radio was on and she was whispering. I asked her to repeat it but she refused. So, who knows? When I took these down to the store there were two little girls there with their Mom - and the younger one (7? maybe 8?) immediately picked up Ellie and hugged her. Can't ask for a better compliment!!!!

and and and ... I got a start on four severed hands today ! It feels good to be making something again!

  • Slowly, slowly

Did a bit more work on the collage - fixed the hair and did some 'decorating'. I'm up to the face but I haven't drawn one in 7 months. I traced the shape onto some tracing paper and tried to draw one. Ai yi yi. Not a good thing, LOL. I'm going to have to do some practicing before I lay down more paint on this.

    Build Your Doll House Furniture

    Tim Lee

Building doll house furniture is not easy. It may seem simple but it's not. If you can build real furniture, you will have an idea of what it's like to build one but making it miniature size is a whole new ballgame.

Building doll house furniture is not recommended to novice carpenters. If you have an experience in wood working, then building doll house furniture may give you some sort of pleasure.

There are tons of doll house furniture that you can make there. Either you can make it for your daughter or your niece or you can sell it to collectors or hobby shops. Chances are you will find someone who is interested to buy what you made.

However, there are things to consider before you start building doll house furniture. For one, you have to carefully choose the type of wood you will be using. The most popular for doll house furniture is the plywood.

Now, if you are building real furniture, the wood and its thickness is important. Well, you can say the same about doll house furniture. You may take into consideration the fact that the furniture you are building must inside the dollhouse first and foremost.

For example, you are making a dining set. You have to measure the size of the dining area. Now this is a tricky business because since there is limited space, you may think the table you built would fit. In the end, it might not because there are other furniture (like cabinets, drawers and cupboards) that get in the way.

Other furniture you can make are the doors and the windows. If the doors and windows of the doll house are already old and chipping, it's probably time you have new ones put in. You may measure the dimensions of each as well as the thickness. Here is where mathematics come in.

That is one absolute furniture that you can make. You see, there are no available windows or doors in toy stores. Making your own is quite tricky but this can be done if your measurements are accurate.

The costs of building your own dollhouse furniture depend on the kind of wood that you are using. Don't worry, you wouldn't be spending as much as you normally would if you are making real furniture.
