collectible Dolls

There is such a variety of collectible dolls on the market. Two of the most popular collectible dolls are Barbie dolls and porcelain dolls. These two categories offer dolls in a wide array of styles and types that it would be nearly impossible to complete a collection. For an avid collector, the way to go is to find something to focus his collection on.

Collectible Barbie Dolls

Starting with the first Barbie doll, created in 1959, these dolls are only increasing in popularity. Nowadays, you can find Barbie dolls specifically designed for collectors. If you are just getting started you may want to find an expert or do some reading to tell you which types of Barbie dolls make the best collectibles.

If you are interested in collecting Barbie dolls there are plenty of resources online that will help get you started. You can purchase dolls on special collector’s websites, online auction sites, and other places. You can also comb yard sales in your area. Sometimes people have collectible items in their possession without realizing it.

Porcelain Dolls

Starting in the 1800’s, dolls started to be made out of porcelain. Now, they are amongst the most popular collectible dolls. Porcelain dolls vary in style, shape, and size. The type you want to collect depends on you. To make your collection more meaningful choose something to focus on, such as porcelain dolls with a wedding theme or those that come from a specific land. Of course, you don’t need to specialize. You can always purchase the collectible dolls that you simply like.

Other Collectible Dolls

Of course, if you want to collect dolls you aren’t restricted to either Barbie Dolls or porcelain dolls. You can find dolls that are designed as toys. Some older dolls that were designed as toys may have some value. There are also dolls that are made to look like cartoon or comic book characters. If you want to be a serious collector, choose what interests you first then find the dolls within those categories that have the most value.

Tips and Tricks for Dollmakers

  • What? A post from me? No way!

Yeah, I know .. been a long time since I've written. I'm in the biggest slump I've ever been in - have absolutely no desire to make anything for some reason. I think it's tied in to Doll Street somehow but haven't figured it all out. Anyhow - wanted to show you a mermaid that I bought in a gift shop recently - I love these little chubby chicks. I have another one by the same artist. I would like to take my Stone Cold Troll pattern and adapt it to make one of these. Want to place a bet whether it ever gets done, LOL?

  • Busy little bee

So this is what I did this weekend ... jump from project to project! The yarn was dyed at a little workshop that one of my Ravelry friends held at her house .. it's some Tofutsi sock yarn. I'm the only one who only dyed one skein of wool - but then that's probably because I know the dangers of a fabric stash, LOL. I don't need a yarn one too ... yet.
Fuchsia, aqua, and grape - yummy!

Then I made myself a couple of little square bottomed drawstring project bags to hold my knitting in. The light blue/purple bag is made from some fabric I overdyed last summer. I used a mix of two tutorials I found online for that one. The next one is a mix of 3 different tutorials and my own ideas. I like that style best. I'm probably going to have my Ravelry friends over for a bag making day next month sometime. One way to use up my miles and miles of fabric!

Finally I did a little work on the collage ... I can not paint! I put the shadow on the wrong side of the neck and I screwed up the hair with the brush strokes. Luckily I can paint over it all and try again! I also need to do more work to fix the shoulder line - but that's getting better. I think this is going to be one of those long drawn out projects, LOL - or maybe a UFO!

  • Starting young

Never too young to paint, eh? He didn't enjoy this at all, LOL, but he sure loved the bath afterwards! He was making a background paper for his Mom to use in her scrapbook. I was an innocent bystander, I had nothing to do with this ... well, other than be the official photographer, LOL. He is 8 months old today - time sure flies!

She thought she could keep the paint just on his hands, hehehe ..

    finally a happy baby!

Vintage Doll Collecting - Horsman Dolls From The Beginning to a Successful Vinyl Doll Manufactu

    Connie Limon

The Horsman doll name is the oldest in America. The doll company was established in 1865.

The Horsman Company imported and distributed sporting goods, novelties, games, toys and German dolls for the first 40 years the company was in existence. It was not a doll producer.

The Horsman Company began manufacturing dolls in the early 20th Century when Horsman’s son, Edward Jr. joined the family company. Edward Jr. was the designer and artist of the company, while his father was the business manager. The Horsman Company soon began selling a great number of American-made composition dolls, which were much unlike dolls the Old World produced.

Unfortunately, Edward Jr. died in his 40s in 1918. His father ran the company after the death of his son, but he too died in 1927. The Horsman Doll Company fell into deep financial problems, and ownership of the company began to pass into different hands. This was something that would happen over and over again in the history of the company.

In 1933, when ownership passed into new hands, the company recreated itself to keep up with the changing times. The new owner now was Regal Dolls. The Regal Doll Company was a small company. The company had a large factory in Trenton, New Jersey when they acquired the near-bankrupt Horsman Doll Company and brought it back to life. In the beginning, this company made dolls under the Regal and Horsman names. The Horsman brand name soon proved to be more popular and the Regal Company changed their brand name to “Horsman.”

During the 1930s and 1940s, the Horsman Doll Company was a huge success. Their focus was upon moderately priced, yet high quality, well-dressed baby dolls. The company used no fancy names, or high powered marketing gimmicks. They just produced beautiful baby dolls little girls could love.

During World War II the serious shortage of materials for toy factories lead the Horsman Doll Company to use what materials were available for medical supplies, soft vinyl prostheses and artificial hands for the war veterans in need of such items. However, they did continue making some dolls.

After the war years Horsman used its wartime vinyl experience to start producing dolls made of firm plastic. Although Horsman was the not the first doll company to use vinyl in 1947, it was the first to use vinyl extensively. This was another important milestone in the history of the Horsman Doll Company. They became highly successful at producing the vinyl dolls in extremely large quantities.
